⊹ About the artist ⊹

I’m Perla, a Chilean-Palestinian artist and author based in Asturias, Spain.

I studied communications before I studied a master’s in art, which probably explains why I think ideas and concepts are above aesthetics. I can sometimes paint just because something looks nice but my best pieces always start from an opinion, an observation or something that’s been on my mind that I already bored people to death around me with. The image comes later, almost as an afterthought.

A lot of my work revolves around identity, displacement, feminism, politics and the weirdness of what it means to be a living breathing meat pocket in a floating rock. Sometimes I make silly things that end up amounting to billions of views (4.1 billions to be exact) like my gifs and stickers on Giphy.com that you most probably have seen on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, X or any big social media app, but sometimes my work can make someone change their mind or make someone understand a different perspective and that’s my favorite thing to do.

I’m also writing an illustrated poetry book because apparently painting wasn’t enough of an emotional outlet.

I travel whenever I can, mostly because I don’t know how to stay still for too long. Every place, culture, meal and conversation eventually ends up somewhere in my work. I’m interested in finding better colors combinations, birds? (I’m definitely getting old) and observing life from an outsider perspective.

I heard a famous tiktok artist saying that artists have to be neutral and that is the dumbest think I’ve seen to date on an app. I definitely don’t think art needs to be neutral. Mine definitely isn’t.

Also Free Palestine.
